Topic: Nutrition 307: Microbiota and the Musculoskeletal System
Credit Hours: 2
Instructor: Howard Benedikt, DC, CCSP, DCBCN
Large segments of human populations suffer from acute and chronic pain syndromes. There has been a growing body of research looking at the gut microbiota as a focal point for chronic illness. This also includes how gut flora may affect the incidence and course of musculoskeletal disease, through various mechanisms of modulating pain and inflammation. Although human trials are limited, they do suggest that manipulation of the gut flora may help in the management of these syndromes.
•Review pre and probiotics; what they are, what forms are best
•Discuss gut barrier function; what can go wrong
•How gut barrier defects impact pain and inflammation
•Understanding how the gut flora impacts musculoskeletal disease
•How to support gut barrier function with nutritional protocols
•How many arthritides may benefit from probiotic supplementation
•Pro and prebiotics may support against osteoporosis
